No one ever wants their favorite TV show to end for the season, they want them to continue moving forward towards more episodes. I always feel the season finale’s are usually pretty crappy. How I Met Your Mother had the best two first season finale’s I can think of in as long as I’ve been watching TV, with Scrubs Season 6 coming in next up there. I know HIMYM season 3 was disappointing in how they ended it, but I’ll live with it, it’s building up to something more.

Season 1 of HIMYM ended on a sad note and a happy note, and the whole time, in the background, is Bloc Party’s song playing, This Modern Love. It sets the mood by constantly building up to a crescendo of aural bliss. The simplicity of the guitars, a faint bass, the drums idly in the background. And it explodes when you expect it to, and as it comes back down, you’re hit with one of the biggest shocks.

Season 2 of HIMYM ended very simply, with Barney just stating it would be Legen, wait for it and cut to black. That’s all you needed to end an amazing season of television. You know what’s next, it’s the dary part, but the fact that they actually used it in such a way that was simple and effective.

Season 6 of Scrubs ends with JD and Elliot not sure of their relationships. JD staying with Kim for their kid, and Elliot unsure of marrying Keith. This is another aural moment where Say Anything’s Alive with the Glory of Love is playing in the background as the final moments of this season pulls to a close. As the camera pull out, the songs plays, and recaps the last part of the season, you get JD and Elliot, holding hands, and leaning in for that kiss you so desperately want to see and it just cuts right before it happens. That scene always gets me. Although Alive with the Glory of Love is about Jewish people being hunted by Nazi’s and loved in death camps, but still, it’s a beautiful song that I can’t get enough of.

Well, that’s about all I had to talk about, just the fact I found 3 really great finale’s. I’m sure there are others out there, but I’m so far behind on my TV watching that it will be awhile before I make another post about finale’s again.

Edit (2009-11-28): If we want to talk about show ending finales, I’d have to say the best one that I can think of at the moment is Scrubs finale where they walk JD down a hallway lined with people from his past 8 years working at Sacred Heart until he reaches his goodbye sheet and Peter Gabriel’s – Book of Love starts playing and a projector shows what JD’s life could be in the future. Seriously, if you do not cry watching this sequence, you’re fucking dead inside. It is simply the greatest ending to a show EVER. I don’t care if they’re making a Season 9, because this show ends at Season 8 for me, like Veronica Mars only had 2 seasons. You can’t just end the show like this and continue, fuck that. Throw that shit up and leave it be.

I guess having friends interrogate the person you’re dating isn’t all bad. They help speed up the process of finding out what is potentially wrong with someone. But at the same time we’re so protective of the new person in our lives and we’re enjoying the time we have now and don’t want to ruin it.

It’s pretty clever that Marshall decides to turn game night into interrogation night. I think the parts about telling humiliating stories brings everyone in your group of friends that much closer on so many aspects.

It’s terrifying introducing new people to your group of friends. You never know if they’ll like this person or if this person will like your friends. Maybe sometimes you hold off on introducing them because you’re afraid of the consequences of doing so.

Sometimes though, we have to just jump into the fire and let our friends make their judgments known, before it’s too late. I’d rather my good friends tell me the truth starting off and not find out how they really feel until that person is out of my life.

There are definitely two main points I’d like to address from this episode that I feel I can totally relate to. Waiting to have sex and couples and firsts.

Taking your time in a relationship is always a good thing, you get to learn a lot about someone and you don’t get screwed (HA) too early on by someone just looking for a quick lay. I had a friend tell me about the 1 month rule. She said that you can sleep too soon with someone, otherwise you’re a hoe, and at 1 month of dating, it’s allowed. Makes sense enough to me, although waiting a month is a loooong time. I kept my last girl to 2 and it about killed her. It’s just you want to make sure things are right with this person and they’re not looking to sleep and run. I know I had my doubts and I usually try to make sure I’m not getting the bad end of the deal here.

That brings me to my next point about firsts. Every couple experiences firsts at different paces. First kiss, first dinner, first time they slept over. It just seems the longer you’re together, the less firsts occur and if they do, you’re not even really thinking about it. I don’t think couples should focus on things like that, I mean they’re nice and all, but why do they even matter. As long as the relationship is completely perfect for the each of you, don’t go adding more complications about firsts this and that, just enjoy what you have and live in the moment.

How great would it be to meet someone at a wedding. I’ve only had one opportunity so far to do so at the moment, but I look forward to more, but it seems everyone I know is married. There’s always been this thing about people hooking up at a wedding, but for some reason I never go in thinking anything about it, because I know it’s a fling and I really can’t have them. I just need a little more substance to my relationship than some one night stand. Buttercup states that the romantic moments experienced at a wedding are great, but not real and refers to them as wedding goggles.

She lays down a few ground rules as well as to how they will keep the night as a memory, but the title of the episode really is the clincher here for me to talk about. She states the drum roll leading up to the kiss is the best part. If you really think about it, you can apply this to relationships. There’s always an aura of uncertainty when you’re dating. Whether or not there’s going to be that kiss at the end of the date, or if you’re going to lean in and do it or is she going to take control and do it herself. That alone is worthy of a drum roll. You’re waiting and waiting and trying to figure out if you’ll get that kiss and how you’ll do it. The lead up to it just kills you and when it finally it happens, it’s like the band is going off and laying down this crazy thick beat just for you. After that, there’s no greater drum roll to look forward to.

I’d like to say I was constantly chasing drum roll after drum roll, but sadly I’m not. I’m sure there are people out there that fuel on the adrenaline of that build up, I’d love to be one of them.

I recently went to the wedding of a close friend of mine. It was a wonderful wedding, but it always remind me of how truly lonely I currently am. You really do need a self evaluation on where you see yourself in 3 months when you receive the invitation. If you are in a relationship, you have to ask yourself if this will last until the wedding or if you’re single, that you will be in a relationship. I was kind of hoping for the latter, but things always change.

I really had wished I could have had someone to take to the wedding. As depressing as the last year of my life had been, I was hoping to turn a few things around, but in the end I had decided to stop trying. I was actually offered he opportunity to dance twice while at the super secret after party. Once by my best friends wife and another from a girl we went to high school with. Now, everyone that knows me knows I hate dancing, because I suck so much at it. So I politely declined with the friends wife and said no to the other girl. Now, the other girl, is indeed quite hot. Honestly, I didn’t want to dance just to dance, I wanted that feeling Ted wanted going to a wedding. Have a romantic setting and hope something sparks up and starts. That wasn’t going to happen with this girl, so I just didn’t bother with it.

“The best way to get over a failed relationship is to celebrate someone’s successful one.”

Oh Ted, sometimes you’re so right, but it helps to have a date.

Ted rents a limo for all his friends and plans this amazing New Years Eve trip to five parties. Well, everything that can go wrong, does go wrong and everyone is left to improvise the night.

Barney is extremely right that NYE is the signal biggest letdown of the year. Every year we want things to be perfect, and we chase it only for it to get away from us. I’ve pretty much decided NYE is now just another day, with no real reason to celebrate. Nothing turned out the way I wanted to on the two NYE’s that mattered, and I still never got my NYE kiss.

There’s one line in the episode that I always think is so great, it’s when Ted says, “All night I was trying to chase something down and it was right there in that limo.” That’s really how I feel about my life. Running and searching for someone but they’re always right around you. I wrote a post about this and only one person really seemed to have gotten what it was referring to. Really I’m referring to the fact we’re always constantly searching for something so perfect, and we always never realized until way later that what we were looking for was right there next to us the whole time. Even if it’s just a piece of paper or even the person you were meant to be with, we’re just so blind when we’re searching so hard. I haven’t been keeping to my no looking rule this year, and I should probably get back to it soon. It’ll help me focus more on myself and when I do find what I’m looking for, it’ll be perfect timing.

But Ted is right, not every night has a happy ending, everything is always leading somewhere. So our story continues…

(Btw, 2006 was a big year, but 2007 was way bigger for me)

I’ve had many episodes where I’ve drank too much, but never enough to black out and lead to crazy events. There’s many stories I could possibly tell, but one always sticks out in my mind as a really good drinking story, so much so, I can barely drink this drink any longer.

I started with me an Anthony drinking Red Headed Sluts (1 part Jagermeister, 1 Part Peach Schnapps, 2 Parts Cranberry Juice). We started early in the evening and at one point Scott and Nathan were over, but they soon left to shoot guns. We proceeded to drink and drink and at one point played Tribes and even the drums. I thought I was killing on the drums, but being drunk I probably sucked pretty bad. At some point Scott and Nathan return and Melissa also joins us. We had also ordered pizza at this time, well, Melissa comes to give me a hug and I being the drunk man, poked her boob in the side while Scott laughed. Now this would be known to be the famous, poke or grab incident. As drunk as I was, I know I poked, because grabbed is just crossing the line, but Melissa swears it was a grab. Up until this day, if Scott pokes my boob, I get to poke Melissa’s, it’s the best friendship deal ever.

The story of Melissa and Scott driving Anthony home is pretty funny too, lots of yelling was involved, but I wasn’t there and don’t really remember it.

The best part of this story occurs at 2 or 3 am. My memory is pretty hazy. I had to work at 6am the next morning (gotta love Kroger!) and I was having trouble sleeping. A belly full of alcohol really isn’t the best thing when you have to be up early. Well, around 2 or 3 I got up to throw up, I had felt it brewing for a few hours and it was time to expel the demons. I threw up so fast and so much, it was like a fire hose directly into the toilet. It was about 3-5 spew and after that I felt like a million bucks. I passed out and woke up, not hungover, but still slightly drunk from the night before. I ended up going into work and feeling horrible but still pulled off my 6 hour shift like a pro.

There’s plenty of times where I got shit faced drunk, but that was one of the better ones. Maybe I’ll post more of those, since those seem pretty interesting and I really can’t drink as much as I used to before.

Lily visits Marshall’s parents and they’re pretty much saying how she should be and what should happen when they marry. She’s in a strange situation because she doesn’t want to be a certain way to please his parents. Now, my first Thanksgiving experience with someone who wasn’t a friend, was a very enjoyable experience, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit nervous going into it, with all the stories I had heard about everyone in the family. It was a big gathering, in a big house, with lots of food. It was actually one of my favorite events during that relationship, I met a lot of the family and everyone was very cool and helped me feel as ease with all the fuss going on over the day. As always, I started off awkward and not knowing what to do or what to say to anyone, so I kind of just hung back and played eye candy on the ex’s arm. Eventually everyone opened up to me and I opened up to them and I enjoyed the day there. It was far different than what was experienced in the show. There were no mayonnaise salads or basicekball.

This primarily deals with what’s going to become of the apartment when Marshal and Lily get married, which, I’ve never had to deal with that issue. I’ve only had 3 roommates total and it’s never been an issue.

But I guess at some point when we have friends, we always wonder what’s going to happen to some part of ourselves that we share with others. In their case it was an apartment, but it could be just a place you go to visit. When people get married priorities change and those married friend may no longer come and visit the same places. We don’t always fight each other for the privilege to say we should always do something together, but shouldn’t we? Marriage shouldn’t change what makes us who we are. Someone can’t decide for you what you can do from now on, just because the government says you’re a legal couple. I say, fight to be happy, fight to keep control of what makes you yourself and after that, I don’t know what I was really getting at with this episode.
